Location
This image is of Ulun Danu Bratan Temple or Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple. It is situated on the shores of Lake Bratan, in the mountains near Bedugul, which is located in the central north region on the Island of Bali, Indonesia.Time
This image was taken in the afternoon around 3.00pm Bali time. Anytime is a good time to photograph the temple however early morning and later in the afternoon are the optimum times. You may also miss some of the crowd at these times.Lighting
We left Kuta in bright sunshine and on arrival at Lake Bratan the clouds were starting to gather. As we walked to the lake's edge the fog quickly rolled in which I admit dampened my enthusiasm a bit at first but when I arrived at the shores of the lake a ceremony was taking place and although the light was very gloomy I quickly realized the photo opportunities that were in front of me. I started clicking away in the hope of getting a few descent images and not until I viewed them on the computer did I realise the fog actually added to the atmosphere of the place.Equipment
When this image was taken I was using a Canon 550D camera with a Canon EFS IS 17-85mm 1:4-5:6 lens. Tripod or flash were not used on this image.Inspiration
As the Ceremony unfolded the High Priest was taken out onto the lake in a canoe to perform some religious rituals. As the canoe lined up with the Temple I hurried around the shore to try and include the canoe and the Temple in the same shot, this image is the result.Editing
The original image was in colour but with the fog I thought it would look good in black and white. This was done in Photoshop Elements. Auto balance was also applied. In my camera bag
These days I normally carry in my bag two camera bodies, a Canon 80D and Canon 90D. I also carry three lenses, a Canon EF 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS USM zoom lense , Canon EF-S 15-85mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens and a Canon EF 100mm 1:2.8L IS USM macro lense. I often carry a Surui carbon fibre tripod on short hikes. I also carry a small rain cover that can fit the cameras and all three lenses if needed.Feedback
The weather in the mountain regions of Bali can change very quickly from bright sunshine one minute to rain or fog the next. I have been caught out numerous times even after checking the weather forecast. I suggest planning to be at the lake early in the morning which would require and early departure if you are not staying in the vicinity or later in the day from around 3.00pm onwards. It's also a good idea to check if any ceremonies are scheduled at the Temple to coincide your visit with the ceremony. Please ensure you ask permission to take photos of any ceremony.
