I used Old Glory as a back drop for this shot, where instead of pointing the flash straight at the drop (which I sometimes do), I pointed the flash at the flag, bounced the flash off the flag and backlighting the drop, which also projects the inverted image of the flag through the drop, giving it this really cool effect. After about 200 attempts, I finally caught this one. I didn't use a timer or any fancy equipment, just my trusty Canon Speedlight 580EXII, which I nearly wore out.
