I took my son out for a walk with the aim to get some cool shots, I could use for composites. We just explored and found a few places that we liked. This was a tiny bridge that I had him sit down on and look up at me (this is always a very flattering pose). His eyes looked so incredibly blue in this light but when it came to the editing, I felt the photo evoked more feeling in black and white. Because I shot this standing very close to him it was distorted quite a bit so, I had to edit the perspective to get it to look right.Time
This was taken in the early evening of summer, last year. It was a lovely, warm and slightly overcast day. I do love sunny photos but an overcast day also has its positives as it works like a soft box and creates great skin and beautiful eyes. This was taken on 26/06/2017, 18:57Lighting
I mostly use natural light, not because I don't want to use an external flash outside but rather because I don't know enough about how to use it (yet). This was shot in natural light, underneath a few branches that helped to make "looking up at me" less difficult (no squinting).Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. It was shot at f1.8 1/500 ISO100Inspiration
I didn't plan to get this photo in particular. I was aiming for some poses I could use for my composite practice. This was more of a spontaneous "wow, your eyes look gorgeous" kind of shot. An "In-between" shot that ended up being one of my favourite portraits of my son. He looks so grown up here, it's bittersweet.Editing
I edited this photo quite a bit. The perspective didn't look right as the bridge lines looked wrong to me so I adjusted that first. I had to copy the background layer so that I could paint him back on so as not to distort him as well. It was a tricky one for me to get right and I'm still not completely convinced if it works or not. I chose black and white as I felt it was more emotional that way, even if it meant losing the amazingly blue eyes he has.In my camera bag
In my bag I have, Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 50mm 1.4, Canon 24-70mm 2.8, Canon 70-200mm 2.8 and Sigma 35mm 1.4. I also have a Speedlite external flash with me, just in case. Most of the time, I just bring my camera with the lens I have on at that moment as I don't like lugging too much gear around. If I shoot for clients I bring it all. My favourite lens is the 70-200mm 2.8 as the bokeh is to die for. On my wishlist is the Canon 100mm macro.Feedback
Keep shooting all the time. Don't worry too much about the actual shot, relax and have fun. Sometimes when we overthink things we end up not enjoying it or disappointing ourselves. Just shoot! Anything you like, don't hold back. Never stop learning! I can't say this enough. Study your favourite artists and practice, practice, practice! Look at youtube videos, there are SO many great ones but also invest in courses, you will only get better. Play around in Photoshop or lightroom. Don't worry about the end result, just play around and I promise you WILL learn from it. Know that you won't create a masterpiece every time, far from it, but you ARE learning and you ARE getting better EVERY time you shoot and edit. Most importantly, have fun!
