Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Polson Pier in Toronto, Canada

Time

Was taken at sunset time in the winter so in-between 4-5pm

Lighting

It's a long exposure that I captured using my lee filter system placing my big stopper filter and also a nd .9 soft grad on the top to help reduce some of the exposure near the top of the frame.

Equipment

Shot on Canon 5d mark iii with 35mm and Lee Filters Big Stopper and Nd 0.9 Soft Grad on the top of the filter tray. Also using a remote trigger to capture the long exposure

Inspiration

I really enjoy capturing landscapes and cityscapes during the sunrise or sunset hours, there is something truly special about watching the sun paint the sky and horizons. On this particular day it was the coldest day of the year in 2018 and the lake had been frozen over from previous deep freeze days. Some people decided they were going to do some type of photoshoot with a little slot machine on the middle of the lake so I decided to capture the machine standing frozen in time behind the setting sun with the iconic Toronto skyline as the backdrop

Editing

I used lightroom to crush some of the highlights my filters couldn't get rid of and also just added some contrast, saturation, clarity, texture, and adjusted some of the colour tones due to the filters placed infront of the lens.

In my camera bag

Canon R6 Mark ii, r to eos adapter, aperture led, rode shotgun mic, Canon 5d mark iii, canon 100mm macro, 50mm 1.8, 35mm 1.4, lens ball, lens cleaner, lens pen, memory cards, 3 batteries, battery charger, head light, flash light, tripod, camera remote trigger, lee filters 100mm system, lee filters big stopper, lee filters nd grad, rain cover, leatherman, AAA batteries, AA batteries, camera strap, business cards,

Feedback

Sometimes you really have to make the sacrifices to get the shot, on this particular day it was absolutely freezing cold -30 degrees with the windchill. My fingers, face, toes and body were all very much cold and hurting while taking this shot. Also I had to travel 40km to get to this location to take the photo. It takes a lot of effort to create something and if you're not willing to put in the work and take chances you will struggle to progress with your craft. Follow your passions and don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Don't expect every adventure to be successful but understand that each experience is an opportunity to grow.
