It resembles a small fox
Lyle’s Flying Fox is a large fruit-eating bat, living in the forests of South-east Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and southern China).

It feeds exclusively on ripe fruit, which it eats by spitting out the seeds or, when it swallows them, by dispersing them in its excreta: its role in the maintenance of the forest vegetation, and therefore for biodiversity, is thus very important.

With its little triangular head, its pointed ears and the brown-russet-red colour of the coat around its neck, it resembles a small fox, hence its common name. Its wings consist of a thin flexible membrane, extended between the very long bones of its fingers.

During the day, living in large colonies of several hundred animals, the Lyle’s Flying Foxes remain hanging, upside down, from high branches. It is at dusk and during the night that they go off in search of fruit, which they locate thanks to their excellent eyesight and olfactory sense.

In view of the destruction of its habitat and the hunting by farmers who fear damages on their fruit harvests, the species is in strong decline and is classified as vulnerable.

Hij lijkt op een hond…...
DeLyles vleerhond is een grote vruchtenetende vleermuis die in de bossen van Zuidoost-Azië leeft (Thailand, Cambodja, Vietnam en Zuid-China).

Het voedt zich uitsluitend met rijpe vruchten, waarvan hij de zaden uitspuwt of, als hij ze inslikt, verspreidt via zijn uitwerpselen. Zijn rol in het behoud van de bosvegetatie, en dus van de biodiversiteit, is bijgevolg zeer belangrijk.

Met zijn kleine driehoekige kop, zijn puntige oren en de roodbruine kleur van de vacht rond zijn nek lijkt hij op een hond, vandaar zijn naam.

Zijn vleugels bestaan uit een dun soepel membraan, uitgestrekt tussen de zeer lange beenderen van zijn vingers.

Levend in grote kolonies van verscheidene honderden dieren blijven Lyles vleerhonden overdag ondersteboven in de hoge takken hangen. In de avondschemering en 's nachts gaan ze op zoek naar vruchten die ze kunnen vinden dankzij hun uitstekend gezichts- en reukvermogen.

Gezien de verdwijning van zijn leefgebied en de jacht door de boeren die bang zijn voor schade aan hun oogst, is de soort sterk achteruit gegaan en geklasseerd als kwetsbaar.
