Behind The Lens

Location

Rocky Butte Park, Portland, OR

Time

Morning, sunrise.

Lighting

The lighting on this image is 100% from the morning sun at sunrise.

Equipment

Nikon D80, no flash, can't remember which lens I had on this morning?

Inspiration

If one were to pan this image up and to the left a bit, one will see the sun rising behind Mount Hood in Oregon. I remember it being very cloudy and I wasn't really getting some great images of Mount Hood on this particular morning because the clouds covered a lot of it. But the sun was still able to get through and shine the light on the fog drifting over the houses in eastern Portland, Oregon. I did manage to get some good images of the cloud covering Mount Hood, However, when I saw this scene opening up below the hill I was on, it seemed more interested to capture.

Editing

If I did any post-processing on this image it was adjusting some contrast on coloring on the image? It's pretty much seen as taken.

In my camera bag

At the time this image was created in 2013, I was switching back and forth between a Nikon D200 and Nikon D80. My stable of len's at the time, and probably still today, are the standard Nikkor 18-55MM lens, The Sigma 55-300 Macro (which was probably used for this image in particular?), and a wide angle lens. I mount the camera on a tripod, currently, I use a Sunpak 2001 UT.

Feedback

Patience is always a virtue when creating images. This image was toward the end of a long two year project of photographing the sunrise from Rocky Butte in Portland, OR. Started in 2012, I would visit the butte on clear, or partly clear mornings to documents two years of the sun rising behind Mount Hood. And tracking where on the horizon the sun rises exactly in perspective to Mount Hood. It was a fun project where I took over 10,000 images but created only around 150 that I actually liked myself. Many of which can be found on my ViewBug profile. Plus, this particular image is the only one of all those images that received some sort of recognition. Both here among the ViewBug Community and from Photographer's Forum Magazine's Best in Photography 2014. Patience is always key when creating images from nature.
