Location
I took this photo at The Spit, on the Gold Coast, Australia.Time
I took this photo close to midnight. It was winter at the time so I didn't have a lot of patience with the cold wind.Lighting
There was a full moon that night so I wasn't really able to get any stars in the shot. I also wasn't too far from a pier with a lot of lights, so I had to compensate for that.Equipment
Nikon D90, Sigma 10-20mm lens, tripod, steel wool, a torch and a couple of other little accessories to help with the steel wool.Inspiration
My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun taking steel wool photos the first time. We originally wanted to take some shots at the end of the pier but there were too many people and too much light. There was also the added benefit of being able to get the buildings in the background this way.Editing
I copied half of the steel wool/torch area and flipped it so it looks symmetrical. I also just edited the exposure, vibrance, contrast etc.In my camera bag
I normally have my D90, Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 24-70mm, Sigma 105mm macro, flash, torch. I'd love to upgrade my camera but at the moment I can't justify spending money on a hobby.Feedback
Make sure you have a remote, a camera that can go to bulb mode and an interesting landscape to do it in. Also, just have fun with it. Try everything that you can think of.
