Taken on a windy and overcasting cold late afternoon, I capture this image at Scarborough Bluff (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) overlooking the lake.Time
Taken at around 3:45pm on December 23rd, 2015, it's certainly not the usual ideal time of day photographers will aim for shooting landscapes, interestingly things kind of worked out as it was overcasting, fairly strong wind, and most importantly I'm in between schedules with about an hour window and this was a spot that I've not been visiting for a while, that I could commute to and picture potential great scenes to capture.Lighting
Though it was somewhat overcasting but with strong wind the bright light from the sun was coming into the picture periodically between clouds, especially when the sun is within the composition and potentially creating a high-contrasting image. I utilized a 4-stop graduated ND filter to cut down the brightness from the sky, as well as a 25-second exposure in order to capture the details from shadowed areas and the misty lake, longer exposure can be achieved but all details in the water would be gone.Equipment
Image taken with Nikon D7100, Tokina 12-28mm F4 wideangle lens, Fotopro C5i tripod for long exposure and graduated 4-stop ND filter.Inspiration
While I had probably only 15 minutes or so as I arrived at the spot, I would have captured images of the shore with nice compositions and called it a day, but I wanted to push myself a bit further so it's not just another ordinary set of pictures in my collection. I explore and reached out further in the area and to the water till I found this bench right on the rocks where the tide was coming into, there I found my settings for the photo.Editing
Since I was not equipped like a professional, I expected to see some imbalance with the lighting in the photo even with the use of the graduated ND filter. The sky ended up a bit too bright, and the misty water can be boring if lacking contrasts within the rest of the subjects in the photo, so I adjusted the levels of high-lights and shadows as well as contrasts, finish it off with a black and white conversion. In my camera bag

We like to capture landscapes during the golden hours, but sometimes there is only that time of day and location which if you need to make the most out of it, ensure to bring along the essential gears and be familiar of the strengths and weaknesses of each. On this overcasting and windy afternoon while it's still at least an hour prior to sunset, colorful scenes were not expected hence right from the start I had in mind already to convert images captured to black and white. On my way there I was thinking of what kind of images I was looking for, based and evaluated on what I have in my camera bag, I decided to go with long exposures of the water and tide. The other very important factor is that to keep in mind that the nicest scene or composition may be somewhere one would never had thought about or just right behind, keep the mind open. It's like driving, we keep our eyes on the road without distraction, and we check the rear view mirror regularly.
