I try all types of photography but recently I've been spending more time in a studio. I always try to think of something different or interesting. There are so many excellent studio photographers that I feel the only way to try and stand out a little is to create a striking or original image. This photo was shot in a small studio in Dublin, Ireland, Edge Photography Studio.Time
Daytime :)Lighting
The lighting for this and all the other 'flicky hair' (as I call them :) ) shots I've done is a simple single light setup, a large soft box high up tilted down and straight on. Also I sometimes use a single reflector under the light to angle some light under the chin.Equipment
Ever since my first DSLR (Canon 350D) I've been locked into the Canon system. I had no particular feelings between different makes just happened to be able to get a cheap second hand DSLR that was the 350D. Like so many other people, once you start down the road with one manufacturer you tend to stick with them as the cost to change is too expensive. This shot was done with my current Canon a 6D, which is a terrific 'budget' full frame camera but has some peculiarities that take some getting use to, mostly to do with focus (or lack of!). Lighting was, as mentioned a single light, a Bowens head and a standard circular reflector, silver backed.Inspiration
I just wanted to make a cool photo :) A lot of time my inspiration is seeing a shot someone else has done and then twisting their idea through my own mental filter and running with it. I think originally the idea for this and the other 'flicky hair' shots came from an old advertisement where a man is sitting in an armchair in front of a tv and is being blown away by it.Editing
Yes ! I shoot raw and therefore always have to adjust white balance, contrast, cropping, colour grading etc. As well as this, there was some skin retouching (not too much as I'm not very good at it) and also, for this particular one, experimented and added an oil painting effect to the hair. I try to keep photoshopping to a minimum, mostly due to lacking the skills. Compositing is definitely something I need to get better at and tend to avoid in my shots. I try to do everything in camera as it's just easier to create a final image that way, well for me it is.In my camera bag
Canon 6D, 24-105, 100macro f2, 50mm f1.4, nissin flash and a wide arrange of ND filtersFeedback
This is a surprisingly easy shot to do, I've been asked about them, about how I got the model to hang upside down, or just how it is done. Well firstly the model is just standing upright normally, I doubt I could persuade them to hang upside down ! The trick is in the title 'flicky shot', get the model to put their hands under there hair and flick it into the air. It takes quite a few shots to get the one you want but the setup is so simple it doesn't take long, from a studio time point of view.
