Behind The Lens

Location

The Imperial Sand Dunes in Glamis, CA. This was the area where motorized vehicles aren't allowed, which is called the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness.

Time

It was just about a half hour to 45 minutes before sunset....so I think that it was about 5:30 or 5:45 PM.

Lighting

I wanted to get some nice warm light and long shadows to really accentuate the shapes, curves, and textures of the dunes.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark II and my Canon 24-105mm f/4L.

Inspiration

I had shot at this spot many years ago and had loved it back then, and I've always wanted to make it back there. The dunes are so impressive and awe-inspiring in person, and I think they look so elegant in photos!

Editing

I used my Nik Collection software plugin in Photoshop...the HDR Efex Pro option. But I didn't want the image to look too fake; I wanted it to look as natural as possible, but still with the little kick that this software can give it. So after applying the filter, I erased some of it.

In my camera bag

When I go out on shoots, I actually have to travel as lightly as possible because of back and neck problems. So I generally only carry a small camera bag that holds my camera and attached lens, a circular polarizing filter, a ND filter, a remote trigger, extra batteries and memory cards....and I think that's about it! Anything else that I might need or want goes in my husband's backpack!

Feedback

I think that shooting just a bit before sunset offers the best results here. And then you just need to pay attention to the shadows when composing your image! If there are some nice clouds in the sky, too....even better!!
