People come to San Francisco in the summer expecting that it will be warm and sunny. Oops. Overcast and cool is much more typical as the marine layer extends inland in July and August. I took this picture while showing a visitor parts of the city that tourists rarely visit.

Lots of people on the beach - fully dressed. It's not that they are modest, but rather that it's cool and windy. No surprise - just the local summer marine layer. This spot is outside the Golden Gate, so it's not San Francisco Bay here, but rather the Pacific Ocean.
