Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Ocean City looking over the Assawoman Bay. I am a self-taught photographer and am learning new techniques each time I go out to shoot. I believe we can never learn enough and l love to walk and shoot with photographers that are more experienced. Fun time. I had an opportunity each morning to shoot the sunrise as well. Toyed around each day with different beach photos. This is one of my favorites.

Time

Sometimes we get "seize the moment" shots and sometimes we have to wait. As it was, I had just taken my dogs to a dog park and somehow, got locked inside the fenced area. I had to climb a six-foot fence to get out and was in a hurry to be sure I had time to shoot the sunset. It was in mid-May, so the sun was setting pretty quick. Then it took some patience once I got there, sitting among the sea oats waiting for the sun to set to get the image.

Lighting

I wanted to get not only the sun in its blazing glory but also the shadows from the condos along the water and the lights that were illuminating the docks. Working quickly to change my settings and chase the setting sun, I was able to do both.

Equipment

This was one of those photos that I was learning my new Nikon d90 with. I took a series of several shots using various settings so I could learn what works best. I used an old Quantaray Tech-10 70-300mm 1:4-5:6 lens (that I no longer use) and a Slik 8000 tripod. I hadn't had the new DLSR camera long, so I was learning what worked and more importantly, what didn't.

Inspiration

Sunsets are a dime-a-dozen, but everyone has their take on what looks good. I love nature and the surprises and bonuses we receive from our environment. The sun rises and sets every day but it doesn't always give us this kind of peaceful and beautiful show, so I wanted to keep and share it.

Editing

I try to get it right the first time, but sometimes, shots like this just need some minor tweaking. Sometimes, the only adjustments I make are to crop out an undesirable edge or sharpen the image a bit. There are shots that require some clarity due to hazy conditions or lighting.

In my camera bag

I used to take everything I own, which is not much. Now, I try to keep it simple. Normally, I have my camera loaded with the Nikor 18-105mm lens and take along a Nikor 55-300mm and a Tokina 12-24 F4 lens for wide angle. I have a couple of older lenses that seldom leave the house, so they aren't even worth mentioning.

Feedback

Be patient. Also, be willing to change direction and play. Always play with your camera. Most of what is learned is learned by trial and error. Not to say a photographer can't learn from classes or by being mentored by others. But experience is our best teacher. I will never stop playing. Thank goodness for digital!!! Memory cards are a whole lot cheaper than film and processing!!
