I took this photo at my local gym. They were nice enough to let me use the gym for free for my school final project. I had to use mixed lighting (ambient + strobes) using models. Paola, the model, is a volunteer that happens to be a trainer at the gym.Time
We shot this late on a Friday afternoon when the gym wan't busy.Lighting
Two words...strip lights. They are awesome to get a long, even light on the subject. I also lit the background with a single spot to separate her from the background and added a tiny bit of fill in the front.Equipment
I also used a couple of strip boxes with an old Norman lighting kit, plus a couple of Hensel mono-lights for some background light and little bit of fill. Camera was a D600 I bought used with a 24-70 lens.Inspiration
It was part of my final project series for my Lighting for Photography II class at Pima Community College.Editing
Not much. The assignment was for school, so the point was to do as little editing as possible. I sharpened, added contrast, and of course made it black and white. Later I took out the logo so I could sell it as a stock image. In my camera bag
My walk-around bag is a Nikon D600 with a Nikon 24-70 lens, a Nikon 70-200 lens, and a Nikon 50mm prime lens. I also carry Magmod gear with me. If I need flashes I have 3 Flashpoint Zoom Li-ion speedlights.Feedback
I think everyone should take lighting classes. Learning to light subjects in a studio, with great equipment, and with a great instructor was invaluable to me. I could never have pulled off this shot without the techniques I got to practice in the class.
