Location
This photo was taken on a WorldPix Journey to Northern Arizona in the fall of 2016. We were checking all the boxes for Arizona on this trip, Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon and of course the iconic Horseshoe Bend.Time
This was taken at sunset, although I had to show up about 3-4 hours early to get the prime location spot for this picture.Lighting
I sat for hours hoping a good sunset for my shot. We started with clear skies but as Sunset approached some beautiful clouds rolled in providing a perfect backdrop. Then I just had to wait for the sun to breach the horizon creating a perfect sunburst to accent the moment. The lighting was perfect dancing on the hills around the canyon.Equipment
I used a tripod set up very low to the ground with the legs spread open wide to reduce shake from the wind that was ever present during the shoot. I used a cable release to further reduce shake. I used a Canon 1DX with a 16-35mm lens shot wide open.Inspiration
I studied shots of Horseshoe bend for several weeks leading up to this trip. I wanted to capture the shot in a way that would stand out compared to all the other hundreds of shots that have been taken here...no easy task! There was a lot of luck in finding the scene we did that day, but I think I accomplished my goal.Editing
This shot didn't require a ton of post processing. I burned and dodged the pic a touch and brought out the shadows from inside the canyon. I also adjusted the colors to match what I saw with my eye.In my camera bag
I usually travel with several bodies - Canon 1DX, Canon Mark 4 and an infrared converted Mark 3. For Lenses I use the 24-70 the most with a few options for landscapes, 16-35 and 14 prime. I also have a 70-200 that I absolutely love for street photography and medium distance wildlife. If I'm shooting Night photography or wildlife I have a fair amount of specialized gear for those shots including lights and longer zooms.Feedback
The key on this shot was 2 things. One, the scene did not look like it was going to work that well when I went and set up...I had to trust that the sky would change, and change it did! Two, I had to set up very early to get a good spot and to try various test shots, etc. Who knew?? Persistence and hard work pay off!
