Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while holidaying in New Zealand. We hired a motor home and parked beside this lake overnight, and we were lucky enough to get an amazing sunset as well as a beautiful sunrise. I am a self taught photographer, and I am passionate about my hobby. I usually have my camera around my neck, and when I travel, it sits always on my lap. While I consider myself a landscape photographer, I take photos of anything, anything at all. I simply love photography, and Viewbug.com has given me a chance to show my best shots.

Time

This was a sunset photo. I took many shots, and the colours changed dramatically.

Lighting

There was no need to think about lighting with this one. The sunset was pretty incredible, and I just stood there for half an hour catching the different lights.

Equipment

This was hand-held, my camera a Sony Alpha200 DSLR with a Tamron lens 18mm-270mm. Exposure time 1/80 ISO 125 F4.5

Inspiration

This was good luck. We had decided to stay here overnight, and this was what we saw from the door of our motor home. So I grabbed my jacket and my camera and took perhaps 100 shots, different aspects of the lake, the light and the sunset

Editing

Once home and into organising my photos, I played with the saturation in Snapheal, cropped some rocks from the foreground in Preview, and virtually did no other post processing.

In my camera bag

I have a Low-Pro backpack that is quite large and I carry everything in there, including my favourite Tamron Lens as well as a Sony 18mm-75mm and a Sony 70mm-300mm. I have 2 spare batteries as well as numerous CF cards. I also carry a crystal ball for fun shots.

Feedback

Read up on how to take the best sunsets, be passionate about what you do, and pray for good luck. Prepare yourself for going out to chase sunsets. You don't usually just stumble upon them. You have to think about where you will get them. But most important of all is...Love what you are doing, and you will be a good photographer.
