Location
This photo was taken in the Kalahari Desert, the South African part of it. On the border with Namibia.Time
It was taken at the very first light of the day, in mid winter. It was still freezing (like it does in the desert in the night), it was extremely dry and the Springbok were in search of some food left. They were digging the roots from scrubs with their frontfeet, kicking up a lot of dust.Lighting
The color of the light was just breathtaking! It was really golden light, which was accentuated by the dust. I chose to take the shots with backlight, so the Springbok looked like silhouettes.Equipment
I used a Canon 1D Mrk III and the Canon 100-400 mm L IS lense. No tripod but a double ricebag, in the open window of the car.Inspiration
The magic combination of warm golden backlight and dust and the beautiful strong antilopes. Such a beautiful setting in such a harsh surroundings.Editing
I shoot in RAW so it had to convert the image to JPEG. The whitebalance setting was perfect, but I added some extra contrast and light. In my camera bag
Two or three bodies from Canon (two Canon 1D and one Canon 6D), Canon 70-200 L 2.8 mm IS, Canon 100-400 L IS, Sigma 150-600 mm Sport, Canon 17-40 mm L, Canon 100 mm IS, remote control, cleaning gear, some filters;Feedback
Never ever hurry to something there might be, like lions. You might miss other beautiful moments to capture. Be patient. And never ever stop taking shots before the magic moment is really gone!
