What drew me to this location was the water tower--it has small-town America written all over it. It doesn't get more American than an old, rusty water tower with a painted American flag, and the city name on a perfect Spring day. My intent for this photo had been to focus on the tower against the blue sky, but the thrift shop in front of the building was getting in my way. After walking around for a while and failing to get the building out of the shot, the collection of old, random stuff strewn across the lot caught my attention. I figured my best option for getting a good shot was to work in the randomness with the water tower. I asked the storekeepers if I could walk around their property and take pictures. They didn't mind and were very friendly. They told me that their location is a prime spot for people to have their pictures taken. I can see why. The wooden fence and the water tower provide the perfect backdrop for a photo or the selfie. After walking around for a few minutes and snapping some photos here and there, I made my way back to the car and noticed the mannequins posing in front of the tower; I knew I had my shot.
