Behind The Lens

Location

We live in Woodland Park, Colorado, and my kitchen deck faces Pikes Peak, so I photograph it frequently. Whether in snow, in summer or in fall, there is almost always something in the landscape or the sky that is attractive.

Time

I believe this was taken as the sun was starting to set. I had been shooting pics throughout the day to get a really nice winter-themed photo for use in producing photo cards. The heavy snow in the forefront trees made a nice left-hand frame. I liked the cloud drifting through the mountain pass and the way the light caught it.

Lighting

The setting sun gave a wonderful rosy-tinge to the photo. With so much snow in the landscape and on the trees, I had taken a number of overly-reflective pictures earlier on. I wanted the feel of a beautiful winter day, invigorating and cold, but without a sense of harsh terrain. The cloud and the sun angle gave me the softness I was looking for. Having the Peak visible, though shadowed, also added softening.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon PowerShot SX60HS, with the extension about 300, no tripod.

Inspiration

I loved the Peak being framed by beautiful snow-tipped branches. I think the beauty of the lighting is actually what sold me on this shot.

Editing

No.

In my camera bag

Other than extra batteries, my charger, and cleaning cloths, my bag is pretty empty!

Feedback

I found that searching for the right light was a key. A lot of the pictures I took with more direct sun were just "too white." I also experimented with the zoom to decide what distance for the Peak seemed to be a good balance with the other elements I wanted to incorporate.
