There seemed to be thousands and thousands of shoes that took up half the room from floor to ceiling. This was one of several displays that appeared to be truckloads of personal items that belonged to the prisoners and victims of Auschwitz. As I looked at these shoes, I focused my attention on a single shoe while trying to find its mate. I imagine this is what it must have felt to have lost a loved one, desperately searching among a sea of faces and not finding your person. It was hard to take in the sheer number of shoes in this display knowing that each one represents a life--and the odds were highly likely the owners of these shoes perished here.

They have a similar display at the Washington DC Holocaust Museum...The pain of it takes your breath away! I like that did this shot in black and white...it's fitting.

Thanks Lisa and yeah, this place was somber and "sobering" is the best word I can use to describe this place. Thanks for reading and for the comments.
