Made in 1874, Emmanuel Fremiet's Joan of Arc represents a holy an undaunted figure of a young teenage girl charging into her first battle as a leader of the French Army. This is an original life-size maquette that is on display in Philadelphia only a half block away from the full sized statue seen on the parkway. It is also speculated that the original bronze statue placed in the Place De Pyramids only meters from where Joan was felled in battle was actually taken down in the late 1890's, encased in gold and sold to Philadelphia's Fairmount Art Conservatory where it is permanently entombed. Only two other versions of Emmanuel's work exist today, one aforementioned in Paris, while the only other piece was installed in Nancy close to where Joan was born. Her heroism in battle is arguably the sole reason for the French reclaiming their country from the British in the 1400's, and nearly 500 years later in 1920 was canonized as a patron saint for her religious devotion to her faith and flag.
