This photo was taken while walking through the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Germany. The memorial is a series of pillars, and as you walk through it you get this sense of claustrophobia.Time
It was a breezy, March afternoon. I was in Berlin for a weekend and visiting here was at the top of my list.Lighting
The memorial is a series of pillars you walk through - the height of some pillars get taller as you walk through. So, the light only comes through the top, where pillars get shorter. It gives you this sense of claustrophobia and suffocation. As you walk through, at least for me, the height and lack of light does give a sense of despair, too.Equipment
I shot this on a Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G. No flash, no tripod.Inspiration
I wanted something that would capture the feeling of walking through this memorial. The person in the photo appeared quickly and I had seconds to shoot this photo before someone else got into the frame.Editing
This photo would not work if it was in color. It had to be black and white. So, in post-processing I changed it to that.In my camera bag
Today, my main gear is a Nikon D750 with a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens.Feedback
Like many photos, it is all about timing. This memorial is popular. So to capture a moment where there is only one person walking through takes patience and quick reflexes.
