Location
This photograph was taken from the Jindalee Board-walk, North Perth, Western Australia.Time
I took this photography at 12:24amLighting
It was a pitch black night with a rumbling thunderstorm overhead with almost no ambient lighting except for the lightning strikes illuminating the surrounds.Equipment
I was shooting with a Nikon D5100 with a 10-24mm, f3.5 DX lens mounted on a Manfrotto tripod and a wired shutter release.Inspiration
I was awoken by the thunder and having always wanted to try capture a lightning bolt, grabbed my equipment and bolted for the beach front board-walk.Editing
During post processing I adjusted the white balance slightly to a cooler kelvin to enhance the natural colours and increased the exposure slightly to bring out the darker areas with some minor contrast adjustment and then cropped the image. In my camera bag
I use a Nikon D5100 DX format and recently a Nikon D610 FX camera. My DX kit lenses, 18-55mm f3.5 and 55-300mm f4.5, fit both cameras. I also carry a variable ND Filter and CP Filter. I use a Manfrotto tripod and wired shutter control. I also carry a spare memory card and camera battery.Feedback
With the lack of ambient light and the brightness of the lightning strikes, I set my camera to ISO 100 not to overexpose the bright lightning. I set the aperture to f8 for good depth of field and a super wide angle focal at 10mm to ensure I captured as much area as possible with the camera set to Manual and Bulb mode. I used tripod levelling and aimed the camera in the general direction of the lightning strikes and exposed at ISO 100 for 2 minutes at a time hoping the lightning would strike within my field of view...and it did!
