This shot was taken in Virginia Beach, VA at the Lynnhaven fishing pier. I am a portrait and lifestyle photographer and was taking photos of my daughter, when I saw this amazing tunnel shot.Time
This shot was captured in the midst of a relaxing afternoon fishing with friends. I brought my camera along for fun and to take a few pier shots of my daughter. The overcast skies, set up a perfect filter to capture this mid-day, under the dock shot.Lighting
The overcast day provided a great pop of color for the ocean which would have otherwise been lost in the bright sunlight. I had no tripod with me, so I put my feet as wide apart as I could to steady my stance and stood in the shade to capture this amazing view.Equipment
This was shot on my first DSLR, a Nikon D90 which my father-in-law passed down to me to help develop my passion for photography. This is still my backup camera for weddings and all other ventures. I used a Nikon 35mm lens set at a smaller aperture to capture more detail.Inspiration
While standing under the pier, I found myself getting lost staring into this tunnel. I just knew that was a moment and a feeling that I could capture, share, and feel over and over again. I love to be able to relay a feeling in my art and this photo still makes me feel as calm and happy as I did that day, staring into the sea.Editing
When it comes to post, I love Lightroom. I like to get my images as close to what I want in camera as I can, then play with the light to really make it pop. I adjusted the clarity to show the definition and worked with the colors until I had just the right feel.In my camera bag
I never leave home without my Nikon D600. It is the first full frame I ever shot on and paid for with photography income. I love it! I generally pair it with my Nikon 24-85 3.5 to start. This lens is one of my favorites because it is so versitle and preforms well in most situations. When I need to drop back a little, I go for my Sigma 70-300 4.5. This is the first zoom lens I purchased and it is by far my favorite overall lens. I also always throw a speed light in there just incase, though the sun is my favorite light of all!Feedback
To capture this shot, you need a day that you would not generally call a "beach day". Overcast and a little misty works perfect to capture these stunning colors and movement of the ocean. I captured this moment at the end of the summer when the air was just starting to cool. Good luck!
