This was taken at a Dance festival in London, There was too many people standing around to get a dance shot ( the event was in a shopping Mall) so I decided to go for portraits instead...and boy did I get a dramatic one with this guy. I decided to give it more impact by flipping it into B&WTime
From what I can recall, it was mid afternoon so 2-3 PM.Lighting
It was fairly bright, with strong natural light coming from the glass roof...another reason I flipped it into B&W because the shop lighting and stage lighting was harsh and did not add to the image.Equipment
My Canon 550D and a cheapish Canon 28-135mm lens.Inspiration
I love this type of public event , It presents it's own challenge but by being flexible , and focusing on the dramatic posture and not the dance it'self, I got an interesting image.Editing
Oh Yes! I think most of it was done in a free Pixlr programme (I still use Pixlr every now and again) and then it would have then been put into lightroom....If I looked at my files, I probably have 5 or 6 versions of this image. In my camera bag
These days I have a Canon 70D,and normally leave a Tamron 24-70 mm lens on it, Which I find a good walk around lens. One of my passions is Aircraft, so I will use my beloved Canon 70-200 f2.8 L lens. Because the 70D has a cropped sensor it make the zoom, in effect a 110-310 lens and If I add my 1.4 extender it becomes a good combo to use ,with only I stop of light.Feedback
I have been asked a similar question many times ( I was lucky to win a London Based " Photographer of the year Competition") I will always say the same, Enjoy what you are doing, do not get hung up with what gear you can afford....I have just bought a very cheap camera with a cheap lens on it and I am having a blast not worrying to much. Also Use your Eyes!....every time I go out( with a camera or not) I look around, how does the light reflect here? , Would this make a great backdrop if I had a model with me?How can I make this shot different to every one else who has probably taken it. A last thought would be " be inspired by the great images that are presented on ViewBug, but be the best Photographer that you can be" and most of all enjoy the art of painting with light.
