Chiaroscuro. The texture of the fog and soft edges of the subject makes it appear to be a Japanese charcoal drawing. Profoundly elegant.

Location
I took this image at a quarry lake just beyond the far Western suburbs of ChicagoTime
This was was at daybreak on a fall morningLighting
All natural light filtered through the fog and mist on the water surfaceEquipment
This was handheld at 55mm I took 3 exposures to be used as HDR in Aperture Priority mode. The settings shown are for the main exposure and I also took one @ -2 steps and one @ +2 steps Camera: Canon EOS REBEL T3i Aperture: f/8.0 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/100Inspiration
This would be one of those "right place at the right time" images. I walked upon the scene and was fortunate enough to not have scared the Heron away. It was a surreal silence. The subject and lighting were already in place and it was a matter of capturing it quickly before it changed.Editing
This was a 3 exposure HDR the was merged and tonemapped in Photomatix for the desired result in the light through the fog as well as the perfect silhouette of the Great Blue Heron. In my camera bag
I typically have either my Canon T3i or T5i with the standard 18mm-55mm kit lens and a 55mm-300mm kit lens.Feedback
I almost always prefer early morning light and love it more when slightly filtered though clouds, fog or mist. There is a softness there that nature provides for us. My biggest suggestion is to be ready no matter your location to take advantage of such situations. I have gone out many mornings prior to sunset with specific locations in mind, most mornings are not so fruitful, but there are times when everything seems to be in place and being there as it comes together is worth the effort.
