Location
Touloume Meadows at Yosemite National Park in CaliforniaTime
Late morning, around 1120amLighting
Natural lighting, perfectly shaded by the fog and low clouds.Equipment
Canon 5DMKII with an EF 17-40 f/4L at 19mm and f/13, ISO 160 @1/60, mounted on a Manfrotto 190CX.Inspiration
Its Yosemite. Inspiration abounds here at Yosemite. Touloume Meadows on the valley floor is a beautiful location, but one does need a super wide to shoot the majestic El Capitan from the floor. I was concentrating on the marshes and the river bed, as well as the famous Three Sisters, when my brother in law shouted to me about the incoming clouds. The rolling fog and clouds on the face of El Cap was the only inspiration needed to start 'rolling the film'! The first thing I did was to race through the wet marshland to get far enough away to pull El Cap into the frame. All the while hoping that the clouds would not blow away.Editing
This was an older picture, so post was done without the aid of LR. Instead, I converted the RAW file in PS3, boosting clarity and contrast. I exported the file to Photomatix and created a faux HDR through tonemapping, some noise reduction via Imagenomic and finishing with levels and saturation in PS3.In my camera bag
Back in 2012, I had a Canon 7D and 5DMKII with a 70-200 f2.8L L IS, a 17-40 f/4L, 24-70 f2.8L, spare batteries and CF cards, Promote P-Cntrl-1 Now, pretty much the same, except for the Promote. Instead, I carry a Yongnuo wireless remote and a T1i IR conversion. Filters-Lee Filters and SinghRay filters. 0.3-0.9 soft GND and 1.2 RGND. Also, I carry a Canon 50mm f/1.4.Feedback
It always helps to be in the right place at the right time. However, lighting for landscape photography can be extremely fickle. You just have to be ready to switch gears at a moments notice. My advice, always look at lighting conditions and be willing to change directions at a moments notice.
