Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph back in March at my Uncle's, low key but lovely, wedding. It was a beautiful Australian autumn day. I haven't been to a wedding in 20 years so the whole experience was new to me!

Time

It was late afternoon, after the ceremony and the sun was just started to set over the grounds of the golf course, so it was really the golden hour of light.

Lighting

The lighting was behind the happy couple and the trees, so there was a bit of diffused lighting but also the sun was low enough so it didn't throw shadows of leaves through the trees.

Equipment

I used my canon 600D and a 50mm lens.

Inspiration

I wasn't actually the official photographer for the day. As I have never done any wedding photography and I wasn't confident enough to take on the task for the day. So I saw it as an opportunity to trail behind the other photographer to practice without any pressure.

Editing

I did my post processing in the lightroom. The original photos were all taken in colour so I changed a few into black and white and sepia, using the one of the programs presets for Black and White as I'm new to Lightroom. I usually like my black and whites stronger with more contrast, but I love the soft white glow effect this preset had on the overall photograph.

In my camera bag

That really depends on what I am photographing. If I know I am doing portraits I will pack my 600D camera (It's the only one I have at the moment.) and my 50mm, my 18-55mm kit lens and my 11-16mm wide angel lens, as i like to incorporate a large background or group of people. I shot with an aperture of around 4. It gives a nice background blur without losing detail of the subject. If I am photographing wildlife or macro I will take my 60mm macro lens for close ups of insects and flowers and my 55-200mm kit lens for long distance bird shots.

Feedback

Think about positioning. Both with lighting, your subject and your position to the subject. Get down at eye level to the couple if they are sitting on the ground, it's a much more personal photograph and realistic viewpoint. MAKE THEM LAUGH! This was a candid photo. Both photographer and I had took some photos previous to this one but they didn't have that spontaneous joy that this one has. Make them feel comfortable, talk to them, make them laugh anything that will make it less awkward and take the pressure off the whole experience.
