Location
I took this photo at the river Säveån just outside of Gothenburg, Sweden.Time
The weather was perfectly winter crisp and I was going by bus to the town Jonsered, outside of Gothenburg. At one point the bus crosses the river by a bridge and the view was just amazing, with mist covering the water and the low afternoon sunlight illuminating the landscape. I realized that this would be a unique opportunity to have a chance to capture some nice photos. So we jumped off the bus a few stops later and walked back to the river as fast as possible since the sun was on its way to set behind the hills.Lighting
The natural light was amazing and the challenging thing was to capture this in a photo. I found that this group of trees made an interesting contrast to the light and the fog. I shot bracketing for most of the shots since exposure was tricky and because I had limited time to check the shots right away as the sun was setting quickly.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon 600D and the Tamron 70-300 VC USD lens at 135mm, f8, ISO 100. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
It was impossible to not get inspired by the wonderful scenery that was displayed through the bus window. The difficulty was to capture it in a photo. I switched between several focal lengths and lenses, from 10mm to 300mm, and turned out to be most happy with the results from the longer focal lengths even if they did not capture the whole landscape like the shorter focal lengths did.Editing
I shot raw, so some editing in Lightroom was naturally required. But, as it turned out, the raw files actually already looked great unaltered (which surprised me since they are usually a bit dull). In the end not much tweaking was needed except for some minor adjustments of levels, contrast and temperature. In my camera bag
I do not have a huge selection of lenses so I usually carry everything with me which currently is a Canon 600D, a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD, a Canon EF 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, a Canon EF 50mm f1.8, and a recent addition of a Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM. As I like to shot landscapes, in particular long exposures, I also carry a 10 stop ND filter, a remote shutter release and a Gorillapod SLR Zoom tripod that easily fits in my bag without adding too much weight.Feedback
When conditions like this appear it is essential to be fast to be able to capture the moment. I try to set up my camera and lens beforehand with the right settings. In this case I took the decision to shot bracketed shots in raw format so that I mainly had to think about composition and focus. In the future I would like to try to take note of locations like this and follow the weather report to predict when the conditions are right to go back and take similar photos. That would give me more time to work the scene and to prepare and scout for good angles to shoot form.
