Location
This shot was made at Lock and Dam 14 on the mighty Mississippi near Le Claire, IowaTime
After spending the day waiting on the eagles clustered there to fish, this shot was captured in late afternoon.Lighting
At this location, the Mississippi makes a turn and flows almost directly west. The wind is coming from the west most days which means that as the eagles are fishing into the wind for greater lift and stability, they are heading into the setting sun. this creates a unique opportunity for photographing eagles in action in the golden hour.Equipment
Canon 7D Mark II, Canon 500mm F4 IS Lens with polarizing filter insert, Giottos Carbon Fiber Tripod and Gepe Gimbal head, Lots of clothing layers as it was about 11 degrees that dayInspiration
Absolutely love the majesty of our national symbol. I am inspired to try and capture their grace, speed, poise, determination and skill with every image.Editing
Converted from RAW in DPP and a bit of sharpening and a slight crop were all the post needed on this particular shotIn my camera bag
In addition to the gear mentioned above, I have a back up 7D that usually has a Canon 70-200mm F2.8 II IS with a 1.4 III extender for shooting birds of prey. I carry a Canon 5 D mark II for landscapes with a host of wider primes and zooms for various situationsFeedback
Having a great focus system is a key to eagle photography and I have been exceptionally pleased with the system on the 7D Mark II. Lots of glass and lots of practice also yield the results we are all striving for. Lastly, patience, patience, patience as it often takes hours of waiting in the cold to get the fishing pass you want.
