Location
I took this photo in downtown Chicago. I had a shoot earlier that day, and then met my friend Sarah for a fun girls night out. It started sleeting and it was just a beautiful and empty Tuesday night. I popped on my wide angle under a hotel awning and took my time walking to the bar.Time
This was shot around 10pm on a Tuesday night.Lighting
I have always been a sucker for a good reflection shot. As I was walking I was just watching the streets glisten and the lamps flair. I waited for the perfect moment of emptiness before pausing in the middle of this street to capture this.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 5D Mark II and my 15-30mm Tamron lens. I never use tripods. I always end up leaving them on location. I stopped buying them about 3 years ago. I can hold fairly still and stable for about half a second exposure. After that I can often be found stacking rocks or propping the camera on my bag.Inspiration
The short time I lived in Chicago, I was sure to bring my camera and wide angle with me just about every time I went downtown. That way when I saw something beautiful I was able to capture it. All I had to do was walk around and find it.Editing
I do very minimal post processing. In photography school we were taught a very clean style of editing. Bring up the shadows and clarity a little, and then just pop it into black and white and make sure the levels look good.In my camera bag
Not much. I like to keep my bag simple. I usually just have one camera body and maybe two lenses. My 85 1.2 for portraits and my wide angle for me and my adventures. I throw it all in a plain backpack. There are many fantastic camera bags out there, but they all look like camera bags. As a traveling woman I didnt want that look attached to me. I needed something much simpler that would help me blend in.Feedback
Dont be afraid of the 15 degree weather. Sure, its brutal and your fingers can become numb and wet. But if you are downtown it is fairly easy to pop inside different stores and shops in order to warm up for a minute. Also, I am a huge fan of week nights. Its the weird unused hours of the day that provide the magic of an empty space.
