Location
This is taken at Monument Valley in July this year - a 40 degrees Celsius day ended with a spectacular thunderstorm providing an incredible contrast with the red desert.Time
This is in the evening, maybe half an hour before sunset, facing eastwards with the setting sun low in the sky behindLighting
I had to use a narrow aperture and a longer shutter speed to try to capture the lightning.Equipment
This is taken with a Nikon D90 on a tripod due to the long exposureInspiration
After exploring Monument Valley in the heat of the day driving back towards the campsite it became obvious there was a thunderstorm brewing. At the first sign of lightning I pulled the car over to try to capture the storm breaking over the desert with the incredible evening light.Editing
Very minimal post-processing was done in Lightroom. The natural light at this time of day spoke for itself! In my camera bag
I have only a basic Nikon D90, with a 18-300 mm lens. In addition I have a 50 mm F1.8 lens for very low light shootingFeedback
I found trying to capture lightning challenging!! Listening to thunder and trying to time the shutter release took a bit of practice, but got it in the end!! Also using a shutter remote helped!!
