Location
I took this shot just outside of the I-470 bypass around Denver in an area called Ken Caryl Ranch. I was out on the Massey Draw Trail in search of Deer and other animals. I spent an hour from 5:30 to 6:30 AM and was skunked. I decided to turn my attention to shooting the tiny wild flowers along the trial so I switch over the my 60mm macro and was on my hands and knees with my Bogen splayed all the way out flat. I was along a creek running along the trail and I heard something coming up out of the creek bottom. As I looked up, this buck was walking towards my location. Given that I was down on the ground I suppose I didn't present myself as any immediate threat. I had all I could do to slide off my Lowepro Rover backback and dig out my 80-200 f2.8 and swap over for a tighter shot. This was a magical moment, both of us eyeing each other enjoying the early morning visit.Time
This was just after sun up around 6:30 am.Lighting
The sun had just crested the Hog Back to the east of my location as was providing some amazing back-lighting.Equipment
I was using a Nikon D100 at the time (July 7th, 2006) and a Nikon AF-D 80-200 F2.8 on a Bogen 3021 Tripod.Inspiration
The Moment, it couldn't be passed up!Editing
I've tried various post processing, but it really didn't need too much. Zero crop, this is the original 2000x3000 full frame image from that DX sensor. In my camera bag
I'll always have @ least a 80-200 and now I run with an 80-400. I'll bring along a 12-24 Ultra-wide, but I really like the 50% bonus that DX provides so I tend to stay on the long end.Feedback
Just always try to be ready gear wise, you never know who or what may stumble across your path and you'd hate to have on had that 60mm macro because you wanted to go light!
