A friend breeds these adorable silver Labrador Retrievers near Zeeland MI.Time
It was around 2 pm when I snapped this photo. The porch provided the perfect shade for soft lighting.Lighting
I was concerned that the afternoon sun would too harsh to take good photos. I was delighted to find this spot on the north side of a garage/barn with a porch. The light colored cement reflected the perfect amount of fill light. No flash was needed.Equipment
Camera body: Canon 1DX, Lens: EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USMInspiration
The subjects themselves are inspiring enough. Silver Labs are probably the cutest puppies I have ever seen. I told my friends when they were getting close to selling their puppies, I would like to take photographs of them for my portfolio and the help them advertise them. Needless to say, they sold quickly. Hoping for some more photoshoots of these cuties in the future!Editing
I do most of my post-processing in Lightroom. Every photo I take is sharpened with a pretty heavy mask so that only the lines are sharpened. Other than sharpening there was a little adjustments made to the highlights and shadows to get the perfect balance that is most natural. In my camera bag
I carry two bags made by Fstop. My larger Tipola backpack does the heavy lifting with a Canon 7D Mark II and an EF 100mm 2.8 macro, an EF 85mm 1.2 USM, an EF 16-35mm 2.8 II USM lens and a Canon 600EX speedlite, and Lee ND Filters and spare batteries, cards, etc. My other bag is the medium Fstop Internal Camera Unit (ICU) with holds my Canon 1DX and EF 70-200mm 2.8mm II USM, and EF 24-70mm 2.8 II USM. and a second Canon 600EX speedlite with a ST-E#-RT Speedlite Transmiter.Feedback
My best advice for shooting puppies is shoot low and wide. I often have the camera on the ground pointing up. This brings the viewer right into the puppies world.
