Location
After some pretty busy weeks at the office, it was time for a short break. I decided to take a week off and travel up north. No plan - no destination - just a road trip. Me and my camera. Usually, we get along pretty well with each other. After some stops in France, I ended up in the Netherlands. In a beautiful coastal city named Scheveningen. While driving down the coast I noticed this pier. Well, not easy not to notice it - it's pretty remarkable with this fairy wheel on top. So I decided to stay and hunt for a good picture.Time
Not hard to tell. Waited for the sunset and hoped for some clouds to catch fire. Was spending around 3h at this location hoping to find a secure place in the waves to take this shot.Lighting
I ended up on the wrong side of the pier to catch the sun star behind the Ferris wheel, but some construction site was on the other side. So I decided to focus on the sky and the clouds catching some colors.Equipment
My go-to equipment is an Olympus OMD E-M1 II - with the ultra-wide Olympus 7-14mm pro lens. To stop down, I used a 6stop ND Nisi Filter. Ending up in a 1.6 sec exposure time - to smooth out the waves and the water around the stones in the foregroundInspiration
As a landscape photographer, I am addicted to water and piers - always wanted to go to Santa Monica or Brighton to take some photos there. After I eventually came across this spot, I just had to stop and take my chance to get my first pier photo.Editing
I processed this photo in Lightroom and Color Efex Pro. Adjust whitebalance and tonemapping in Lightroom and adding some extra contrast in Color Efex Pro. Finally some dodge and burn in Photoshop. In my camera bag
Most important - instant coffee. For the long cold nights. I always need coffee to cheer my up when I not managed to get the shot I wanted. I exclusivly shoot with my Olympus OMD E-M1 II. Using my favorite 12-40 Olympus Pro 2.8 Lens. Depending on the trip I'll have also a 7-14mm and 40-150 Olympus Pro 2.8. To support my shivering hand I'll us a Three Legged Thing Tripod - named Winston.Feedback
If photography is your hobby - make sure to give space to your passion. Break out from your routine. Just go out and play. After long days in the office, my creativity seems to die, and the effort to go out seems too high. I remember the day traveling 12h to get to this spot - and the joy I felt standing in the waves taking this picture. But always make sure cleaning your tripod afterwards :)
