Location
This photo was taken on a late afternoon walk along the Lagoon in the Manawatu, New Zealand in Spring. These wee babies were exploring a new environment while Mum was watching nearby. The tiny white daisies drew their interest in the grass.Time
I really love this shot and it is one of those moments that I keep going back too. A peaceful and joyous moment of Spring. I took the shot in late afternoon while shadows and sunlight played on the ground and the wee ducklings moved in and out of the shadows.Lighting
The sunlight was hitting the grass behind the ducklings as they moved into the shaded area among the daisies. This brought them into focus in front of me. I like the foreground of the daisies with the ducklings sitting in the shade between the light of the sun and the brilliance of the flowers.Equipment
My Canon PowerShot SX60 HS which at the time was my favourite easy to carry camera and looking back still is. I held it in my hands for this shot and got down on my hands and knees to capture the ducklings among the daisies.Inspiration
I love Spring and all the brings into our world. The ducklings are so beautiful and so unaware of the dangers all around them. Exploring life and learning by following their mother. They created such a stunning image that I could not help getting down with them in the grass to see the world from their perspective.Editing
Simple cropping for this shot to centre the ducklings in the frame. In my camera bag
I normally carry my monopod for stability for certain shots and as a handle generally. Also in my bag are spare batteries and storage cards, soft cloths for cleaning and a spare pair of glasses so I can actually see what I am doing.Feedback
Getting down with your subjects is the key to this type of shot. Lying on the ground among the daisies the ducklings come to you. They are so into exploring and you become their focus as much as they are yours.
