This photo was shot in my personal studio. I used 4 Alien Bees softboxes against a white backdrop.Time
Since this was a studio shot the time of day isn't really applicable. This was 100% studio light. Controlled, measured, and set up specifically for this shot.Lighting
The Alienbees were used 3 in front and one overhead with a 5th light on the backdrop. They were set to 1/2 power as the model was a red head with a fair skin tone. I wanted to control the light so she didn't wash out against the backdrop.Equipment
Nikon D700, 105mm f 2.8 Nikkor Lens, RRS Tripod.Inspiration
I really don't like studio or model photography. I can do it, but its not my passion as a photographer. My daughter on the other hand LOVES to have her picture taken. So, after some begging and pleading, I set up for the shot. She wanted something good with her new glasses and this very fluffy stuffed animal. So, we set out to get something cute. She was just a kid in this shot. All grown up and in college now.Editing
Color balancing, sharpening, and the B&W conversion in Photoshop. Thats about it.In my camera bag
I'm a 100% Nikon Shooter. All my lenses are Nikkor Lenses and in the studio, I use Alien Bees for lighting. My tripod is Really Right Stuff with ball head.Feedback
Studio Photography is great if you get it set and do the same thing over and over. When you are doing something unique and you are setting up for a shot use a light meter. Test several shots and adjust your power on the lights based on the subject, wardrobe, and desired look. Take your time if you can and get it right. Compensating for bad light in Photoshop is a bunch of work, so focus on a good set up. Use a color balance card to adjust your white balance before shooting. This will also save some time in post.
