Mother Nature never disappoints. Our challenge is finding the hidden gems she provides. This shot was a photowalk accident.

Location
This photo was taken on a walk in the hills of Maple Valley, WA. Nothing particularly interesting about the location, I was drawn by the contract of the leaf stem and the leaf structure. These leaves were laying on the ground on the trail. Surrounded by thousands of others. I'm not really sure what caught my eye initially, but when I got it back home to do my B&W conversion I was happy with it.Time
This was taken around 3 PM in the dead of winter. Being Maple Valley is in WA, it was overcast and drizzly the day the image was shot.Lighting
Being this is a winter shot in Washington, the sky was a heavy overcast and light was generally terrible. Since I was under a canopy of trees that were shedding their leaves the natural light that did exist was muted.Equipment
NIkon D300, Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8 lens. Hand held, no filders.Inspiration
Often times, I would just go for a walk and see what I can see. The entire exercise is training my eye to notice that which others wont or miss. So, this was a practice shot with that goal in mind. There were thousands of these scenes all over the place. The dark black stem of this leaf caught my eye so I shot it knowing it would look good in B&W.Editing
This is a simple B&W conversion in Photoshop. Sharpening was added to make the areas in sharp focus pop. The rest is as mother nature left it for me.In my camera bag
I am a 100% Nikon Shooter. Typically I travel with my D810 and a D700 as a back-up. I often carry my F5 and film (just in case). All of my lenses are Nikkor, either prime of f2.8 at a min. Generally, when I am out and about, I have 2 bodies and 4 lenses. I carry wide, journalism, zoom and macro with me unless its a specific shoot then I only carry what's needed.Feedback
This shot is a happy accident taken while experiencing nature and looking for something to shoot. Take your camera everywhere, press the button often. Pictures are free now (no film costs) so exercise the shutter and see what you get. Try different angles, lenses and perspectives of the same subject to see what and how these small changes impact the overall composition. It's amazing when you practice like this and get a good shot.
