Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the wildlife refuge below my house. I am a self-taught photographer and this was one of my first forays into the world of editing the photos I shot. I love the way water lilies just float on the surface of the water.

Time

It was shot in the later part of the morning in June, 2015. The sun was just about straight up in the sky. So, shadows were barely present.

Lighting

I wanted the viewer to see the magic in the lily that I saw. It was why I removed the background and left the darkness of the water with its barely perceptible reflection. In this way, the lily seems to glow with its inner beauty.

Equipment

I used a Nikon Coolpix L830 ... no other equipment except for editing was used.

Inspiration

What inspires me to take any photo is my connection to nature's beauty. Through my Irish pagan spiritual belief everything around us is connected through the divine sacred ... it all holds the same energy we do. This energy is given to us by the Goddess and embodies her beauty. It's why my motto is to "Look for the extraordinary in the ordinary."

Editing

As I said above, I removed the background. It was of various other lilies and their leaves. I used the dark color of the water to do this in photoshop for the match. This way, I could leave the barely perceptible reflection of the lily in the water. I wanted it to look as if it were a light suspended in a night sky.

In my camera bag

In my backpack, I have 2 cameras. My Nikon Coolpix and my Nikon DSLR (which I'm still learning to use properly) w/ lenses. I have a mini tripod that I can put on my car hood or other tables, flat surfaces if necessary. I have filters, camera hood, spare batteries, soft cloths for cleaning my lens, pen, paper (to keep track of where I've been on certain dates & times and what the weather was like), business cards, maps, a piece of saran wrap, a jump drive that will allow me to connect my camera to a computer, sun glasses in case the weather changes ...

Feedback

Come to the Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin in the late spring. Go to the viewing stand across from their office and there is the spot where I took this photo. The immediate area below the viewing stand is filled with water lilies as this is the backwater of the Mississippi River. I recommend this whole refuge for nature photographers. It's one of my favorite haunts throughout the year and I'm never disappointed in the photo opportunities it presents to me. From flora to fauna, you can find it all here.
