Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Bluff Siding Wisconsin on the Mississippi River. I am surrounded by huge bluffs that hide these deep valleys. This area part of what is known as the Driftless Zone. An area that was untouched by the glaciers. The bluffs have been described as a smaller version of the Appalachian Mountain range. This photo was taken in one of those valleys near my home.

Time

This photo was taken early in the morning ... the dew was still on the petals.

Lighting

While not evident in this photo, I prefer taking photos early in the morning or later in the day because then I get a better play of shadow and light on the objects I'm shooting. However, with this shot, that was not my intent. The dew and the 3 daisies were my focus.

Equipment

I used a Nikon Coolpix L830 ... no other equipment except for editing was used.

Inspiration

First, it was the dew on the daisies, I love the way they look so fresh. Second, the daisy is probably one of my most favorites flowers. Third, it was the fact that there were 3 of them. Three is a special number to me. It reminds me of the Triquetra, which represents the Triple Goddess, it is the basis of my spiritual beliefs. Whenever I see a grouping of 3, I feel she is speaking to me and I take the photo of it. I don't mean this to sound weird or anything, but it is why I shot this photo.

Editing

Because I wanted to focus solely on the 3 daisies and the dew on them, I completely removed the background and replaced it with a black background to highlight their beauty.

In my camera bag

In my backpack, I have 2 cameras. My Nikon Coolpix and my Nikon DSLR (which I’m still learning to use properly) w/ lenses. I have a mini tripod that I can put on my car hood or other tables, flat surfaces if necessary. I have filters, camera hood, spare batteries, soft cloths for cleaning my lens, pen, paper (to keep track of where I've been on certain dates & times and what the weather was like), business cards, maps, a piece of saran wrap, a jump drive that will allow me to connect my camera to a computer, sunglasses in case the weather changes ...

Feedback

Due to the simplicity of this photo, just follow what I said I did and you will have success. My best advice is to just shoot what you love. If it's roses, then shoot roses, if it's seagulls, then shoot seagulls. It really doesn't matter what your object is, just follow my motto: "Look for the extraordinary in the ordinary."
