Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the swamps near the Whitman Dam on the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin side of the river. It can only be accessed from turning off Hwy 53/35 North near Indian Creek, Wisconsin.

Time

I love taking taking photos of the mist. When I wake up in the morning and see that I have a foggy morning, I'm literally running for my camera and am out the door. Especially in the autumn, when there are so many colors. This morning was no exception! Because there had been no rain for a few days, I knew I could finally get back in to this area that I had been dying to go to and I had a feeling that with the mist it would be something special. I hit this particular spot at about 6:30 a.m. just as the fog was beginning to creep in off the river. I decided to shoot it through the sun roof of my car. I wanted to have a different perspective than normal.

Lighting

This is all natural. The beauty of this photo is as I saw it that morning. The sun if it would have not been covered by the fog, would have been just over my left shoulder. That was all the lighting there was. I did no touching up after the photo was shot. It truly didn't need it.

Equipment

The only thing I used was my Nikon L830 camera and the lip of my sunroof to steady my hands. Oh and my car stereo blasting my favorite songs!

Inspiration

It was just the approach into the swamp area and that view. It just gave me goosebumps. People ask me all the time how I decide to take a photo, where to go, what inspires me. I answer them like this .... I get in my car and drive. I let the day and my instinct inspire me. I'll know it when I see it. Often it's as if I am led to certain areas to take a certain photo like this one. I look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. There is so much beauty all around us but we never see it anymore because we are always waiting to be dazzled by technology. We've forgotten how to really see things. Additionally, my connection to nature through my pagan beliefs allows me to just go and connect. Once I find whatever it is I'm looking for, I get lost in the moment/area and shoot to my heart's content. There is so much out there in our everyday world to see that I'm afraid I'm going to miss it! What I've really been enjoying is family and friends who text me or call me and say, "Hey, are you out taking pics of the moon? It's huge!" or "there's a heavy fog over the river!" things like that. It's great. It's like I have eyes all over!

Editing

As I said before, none. I'm just really learning how to use photo shop and when that photo was taken, I didn't even own it.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon L830, A lens cleaning kit, Extra batteries, Business cards, a mini tripod that I can put on the hood of my car, a notepad so I can take notes of places to return to because I can see a place that will be great for a winter shot etc, and that's it. I keep a tripod in the trunk of my car at all times.

Feedback

Fog is not something we see everyday here. The weather conditions the day before have to be just right and then you have to be at the right place at the right time. That's the downside of taking photos of the mist/fog here. There's no consistency like in some places where you can say everyday the mist comes in at this time. It doesn't happen for us like that here. In fact, fog in the afternoon is so rare, it's a treat! BUT the upside, is you just wander around and look. Really look and explore. In the Spring you get the newness, beginning of life, in the winter you can catch the faerie like quality of the mist, in Summer it's the lush jungle, and in the autumn oh the colors will just melt you! That's what I love about taking mist/fog photos. It will take you to places you never dreamed of if you let it. If you go with an open mind and a willingness to give up control to it, you can get just about any shot you like. It's just waiting for you to discover it.
