Location
This photograph was taken in Burano, Italy. My wife and I were on vacation in Italy and were staying in Venice. We took a boat to Burano. Once we got there we were fascinated by how colorful everything was. It was just a beautiful place to photograph.Time
This photograph was take mid afternoon, probably around 4:00 PM. We had spent a good part of the afternoon wandering around and taking photographs and then came upon this scene.Lighting
It was soft light on the blue wall so it was just right. We came upon this scene at just the right time.Equipment
The camera was a K B Canham 4x5 Metal Field Camera with a Schneider 210mm APO Symmar lens. An Acratech - Ultimate Ball Head and a Giottos carbon fiber tripod was used.Inspiration
I was taking a photo of one of the colorful buildings, with a bicycle by the door. My wife said, “take a look behind you”. I turned around and saw this beautiful blue wall with the geraniums in the window. I finished taking the photo I was working on, and I moved my camera and tripod to set up to take the photo. I think the simplicity and the colors of the image was the inspiration. The soft light on the wall was just right.Editing
This image was taken on Kodak 4x5 Portra VC, a color negative film. It was scanned with an Epson V-750 scanner. I use Silverfast scanning software, as I find it gets really accurate colors from color negatives. I usually do a slight darkening of the edges like I did in the darkroom. For this image, I did very little in the way of post processing, as the lighting was very soft on the wall and flowers. On thing I do find with 4x5 film that is scanned or any size film negative, there are many spots that have to be cleaned up in Photoshop with the Spot Healing Brush Tool making it easier to clean the dust spots. In my camera bag
This photograph was taken when I was doing large format photography. My current equipment is a medium format outfit. I found the quality of the images matched the look of the large format 4x5 and 8x10 outfits that I previously used. Just to keep an open mind when photographing. When you first find something to photograph, always look all around you as there may be another photograph right behind you,. Always look at how the light is falling on the subject you are photographing. If it looks right, then just compose your image. If you find the light is not right, try to figure out the best time to come back to take the photograph.
