This photo was taken in the backyard of my home in Charlottesville, Virginia.Time
This shot was taken around 4pm on February 25th...a snow day, so the puppy had plenty of energy and a need to explore.Lighting
Although the sun was low and the skies overcast, the snow reflected a great deal of the ambient light so I elected to forego any flash use.Equipment
Nikon D7100, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, handheld, ambient lightInspiration
We don't often get snow that covers the grass, so this was a rare opportunity. I had made the mistake of leaving my Maine Hunting Shoes by the door and I noticed that my 9 week old Labrador Retriever had stolen one on her way out the door. These two things created the opportunity for the shot, so I followed the dog with my camera instead of recovering the boot. This was the second dog to escape with my boots, so I had previously learned my lesson that it is better to capture the moment than to attempt to chase down a puppy with a prize. Also, I have always associated Chocolate Labs with the state of Maine and LLBean who made my boots, so I thought the photo would tell a good story.Editing
I reduced the highlights in order to regain some of the texture of snow and reduced the blue luminance by 25% to bring out the colors as though polarized. In my camera bag
I generally have a D7100 with a prime lens (28mm, 50mm, or 85mm depending on what I expect to be shooting) and a D810 with a 24-120mm f/4 or a longer zoom. I occasionally carry a Nikon speed light as well.Feedback
Follow the action, even if it means running out in the snow in your slippers.
